About Ersari |
It is not known who first developed the art of weaving a pile carpet,
although it is believed that the Turkmen were among the first to refine
this art and bring it to an unsurpassed level of technical, visually
expressive and symbolically transcendent mastery. The Ersari Turkmen
Weaving Project was started in 1988 with the goal of reviving these
old Turkmen designs, and to help benefit the Ersari Turkmen refugee
community. This project was initially funded through a non-profit
organization, Cultural Survival Inc. All proceeds from the initial
sale of these rugs continues to be directed into this project both
for its growth and for the benefit of the Ersari Turkmen refugees.
These rugs are wonderful tribal pieces made just as the old Turkmen
rugs were, using only hand-spun yarn and pure plant dyes.
