About Hazara |
In recent years Hazara weavers have migrated to Pakistan as refugees
in great numbers due to their enmity with the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan.
They are a Shia people who lived for centuries in the central mountainous
region of Afghanistan. Hazara weavers produce a very finely woven
supple carpet with a symmetrical or Turkish knot on wool foundation.
This knot with the fine supple weave gives these carpets very much
the look and handle of old Caucasian or Turkmen carpets. Hazaras also
produce more finely woven rugs on a cotton foundation called Aamu.
