About
Larhabi Sumak
Most people are familiar with flat-weaves but what comes to mind most often is the kilim. The sumak weave is more intricate and time consuming than a kilim weave and the result is a more substantial rug. The sumak weave crosses several foundation threads then doubles back underneath and emerges again to move forward once more. Oversimplified, it is a two steps forward, one step back approach. In actuality the weave is extremely varied and intricate in order to produce the desired pattern. Technical aspects aside, these sumacs, woven by Farsi speaking Larhabi people in northern Pakistan, are uniquely gorgeous. They are especially suited for high traffic or high spill areas such as hallways, kitchens and bathrooms.
